Kurzporträt Varberg

Humble and charming, Varberg is one for your travel wish list. With its compact town centre, sandy beaches and imposing seafront fortress, the Swedish coastal town offers a peaceful escape from the country’s busier cities.

Varberg’s rich and diverse history dates back to the Middle Ages. Fortified in the 13th century, it boasts an impressive castle standing as a reminder of the town’s military past. There’s a hostel inside, where you can sleep in the former state prison’s detention cells. Throughout the centuries, Varberg has been a centre of commerce with its bustling port, as well as a prominent health resort since the 1800s – the Swedish still flock here to enjoy its fresh sea air.

The town’s centre is a maze of cobblestone streets lined with historic buildings and cosy cafes. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with over 60 seafood restaurants dotted around the town. This place has all the ingredients for your next getaway.

Top three things to do in Varberg

Explore Varberg’s imposing fortress

Varberg’s magnificent 13th-century castle is the town’s crown jewel. Marvel at its mighty walls and large bastions, while learning about its history through a guided tour. Check out the Hallands Historiska Museum, with its interesting exhibitions displaying the history of the province. The fortress offers panoramic views of the town and the sea – the ideal spot for picnics and scenic walks.

Relax at a traditional Swedish bathhouse

Varberg is a popular health resort with a generous offering of spas. The pick of the bunch is the striking waterfront Kallbadhuset. Built in 1903, the bathhouse’s unique blend of orientalist and gothic architecture gives it an authentic Scandinavian feel. Take a cool dip in the open-air bath then let off some steam in the sauna. The perfect way to unwind.

Hit the beach

Sweden’s summer can be surprisingly warm, and Varberg’s sandy beaches are a great place to cool off. With a 2.5 km-stretch of coastline which resembles the Mediterranean, you can easily spend the day sunbathing and splashing around. What’s more, Varberg is recognised as northern Europe’s best windsurfing, making it a hit with the adventurous type. Wind and kite surfing courses are available for beginners.
