Kurzporträt Suzhou

Suzhou, often called the Venice of the East, is a gem in southeastern Jiangsu. With over 2,500 years of history, it’s famous for its canals, classical gardens, and as the birthplace of silk – handmade silk fans are a must-see. A visit to Pingjiang Road offers a glimpse into the past, with traditional teahouses serving up local delicacies like sweet sesame cakes. Culturally, Suzhou is home to Wu culture and Kunqu Opera, one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Plus, Suzhou’s prime location makes day trips to Shanghai and Hangzhou a breeze.

Top 3 things to do in Suzhou

1. Explore classical gardens

Step into a world of serenity at UNESCO-listed gardens like the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lingering Garden. Built during the Ming Dynasty, these masterpieces showcase Suzhou’s artistry with winding pathways, koi-filled ponds, and a maze of pavilions.

2. Head up to Tiger Hill

Towering at 36 meters high, Tiger Hill is steeped in history, and home to the leaning Yunyan Pagoda – dubbed the Leaning Tower of China due to its slight tilt. The hilltop also offers panoramic views of Suzhou – a must for those all-important photo ops.

3. Cruise the canals

Hop on a traditional wooden boat and glide through Suzhou’s ancient waterways. With stone bridges, willow trees, and traditional houses lining the canals, it’s a peaceful way to experience the city’s beauty.
