Kurzporträt Madison

It’s no wonder Madison puts outdoor living centre stage when you see the geography of the city. Wisconsin’s capital sits on a thin strip of land right between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, within America’s Great Lakes region, so spending time on and around the water is built into the DNA of this place. The university’s lakeside campus is a hub of activity, giving the city a youthful, creative and free-spirited feel. But there’s plenty of history here too. A wander up State Street brings you to the State Capitol building, with its imposing 279-foot dome, which has been at the heart of Wisconsin’s state government for over 100 years.

Top three things to do in Madison

1. See the State Capitol and square

When you visit the State Capitol, remember that it’s more than an attractive landmark. Make sure you head inside to check out the mosaics and columns in the marble-clad rotunda and head up to the seasonal observation deck for views over the city and lakes. Head there on a Saturday to catch the famous Dane County Farmers’ Market in the square – it’s one of the largest producer-only markets in the USA. Fresh Wisconsin cheese curds and spicy cheese bread are must-try market delicacies.

2. Visit Olbrich Botanical Gardens

Checking out the cycling and walking trails is an obvious way to enjoy the outdoors in Madison, but a visit to the Olbrich Botanical Gardens lets you explore at a slower pace. As you follow the paths through 16 acres of greenery, look out for a flash of gold leading you to the intricately decorated Royal Thai Pavilion. And if the weather turns, you can head to the Bolz Conservatory to warm up in the tropical climate of the 50-foot-high glass pyramid that houses hundreds of species of tropical plants.

3. Eat your way around the city

Madison is home to a whole host of foodies. Joining one of them on a food tour is a great way to get to know the city. Taste your way around the Capitol, tucking into Wisconsin favourites like squeaky cheese curds and bratwurst. Wash it down with a craft beer or a Wisconsin-style Old Fashioned (made with brandy rather than whiskey). Then round off with a scoop of Babcock ice cream to celebrate the heritage of the city – it’s made right at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
