Kurzporträt Lugo

With its grand, UNESCO-protected Roman walls, ancient cathedral and lively tapas scene, Lugo is a city that knows how to blend the old with the new. Nestled in the heart of Galicia, Spain, this charming city – which is home to around 100,000 people – lines up a mix of history, culture and gastronomy that you won’t find anywhere else in Spain. When it comes to the latter, you can expect the likes of boiled octopus and Galician broth made with pork, turnips and white beans to grace menus in restaurants all over the city. And, with the wild beauty of the Cantabrian Mountains just a stone’s throw away, you'll never run out of things to explore.

Top three things to do in Lugo:

1. Stroll along the top of Lugo’s ancient Roman walls

Lugo's UNESCO-listed Roman Walls are an absolute must-see. Constructed in the 3rd century AD, they’re the best preserved of their kind anywhere in Europe. Walking along the top of these ancient fortifications, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the city below. The walls also encircle Lugo's historic centre, making them a handy reference point for when you need to find your bearings.

2. Step inside Lugo Cathedral

As landmarks in Lugo go, the Cathedral of Santa María de Lugo stands out from the crowd. This place dates back to the 12th century and boasts a bunch of architectural styles, from Gothic to Baroque. Inside, you can ogle the complicated stained glass windows and intricate woodwork, or head to the top of the bell tower for some pretty unbeatable views of Lugo.

3. Wander around Praza Maior

Praza Maior is the heart and soul of Lugo. This lively square is surrounded by beautiful historical buildings, including the town hall and a collection of huge noble houses. It's the ideal place to sit down at one of the outdoor cafés, recharge your batteries and watch the world go by in between spouts of sightseeing.
