Kurzporträt Kempten (Allgäu)

What makes Kempten special isn’t just that it’s one of Germany’s oldest towns – it’s how effortlessly it mixes Roman history, Bavarian charm and everyday local life. You can wander through ancient ruins in the morning, browse independent shops and cosy cafés by lunchtime, and be walking beside the Iller River by the afternoon. It feels less polished than some of Bavaria’s bigger-name destinations, and that’s exactly the appeal. The surrounding Allgäu countryside is all rolling green meadows and snow-capped Alpine peaks, while the food is gloriously hearty. There’s a relaxed, lived-in atmosphere here that makes it easy to settle in and stay a while.

Top three things to do in Kempten

1. Step back into Roman times at the Archaeological Park Cambodunum

Locals still talk proudly about Cambodunum, the Roman settlement that stood here nearly 2,000 years ago. The Archaeological Park Cambodunum brings that history to life with reconstructed buildings, thermal baths and a Roman theatre. It’s easy to imagine what daily life was like here, and the views over modern Kempten are a reminder of just how long this place has been inhabited.

2. Admire the grandeur of the Residenz Kempten

This is where Kempten shows off its elegant side. The Residenz Kempten was once home to the powerful Prince-Abbots who ruled the region for centuries. You get a sense of stateliness and splendour with the palace’s wonderfully over the top Baroque interiors. Don’t rush through – the grand staircase, ornate stucco ceilings and opulently decorated rooms are the kind of details that make you stop and stare.

3. Slow down beside the Iller River

When locals want a break from the town centre, they head for the Iller River. The tree-lined riverside paths are perfect for a gentle stroll or a bike ride, and on warm days you’ll see people dipping their feet in the water or relaxing in the nearby beer gardens. It’s a lovely place to slow your pace and enjoy views of the Allgäu hills and, on clear days, the Alps.
