Kurzporträt Ica

Desert landscapes, vineyard-lined valleys and laidback vibes are what best define Ica. Nestled between dunes and fertile farmland on Peru’s southern coast, this city revolves around the contrast between desert and irrigated green fields, where grapes, pisco and wine have been produced for over 400 years. You can spend your time exploring dunes, tasting local spirits, or slowing down by a small desert oasis.

1. Head out to Huacachina Oasis

Just outside the city, Huacachina feels almost unreal. A small lagoon sits surrounded by towering dunes, with palm trees and low buildings clustered at the water’s edge. You can climb the dunes for wide views or try sandboarding down steep slopes. In the late afternoon, the light softens across the desert, and you’ll see people gathering to watch the sun drop behind the horizon.

2. Try pisco and visit local vineyards

Ica sits at the heart of Peru’s pisco region, and you’ll find traditional wineries dotted across the valley. But that’s not all, you can visit a local bodega to see how grapes are turned into a yellow-tinted spirit called pisco, from fermentation to distillation. These spots usually offer guided tasting sessions, too. A lot of these vineyards have been family-run for generations, meaning you always get a closer look at the region’s long-standing traditions.

3. Explore the desert landscape

Beyond Huacachina, the desert stretches out in every direction. You can take a buggy ride across the dunes or walk quieter ridges away from the crowds. The landscape is stark but constantly shifting, shaped by the southern winds. The scale of this arid landscape becomes more and more striking the further you go.
