Kurzporträt Huaraz

Snow-capped peaks, high-altitude lakes, and rugged Andean landscapes make Huaraz a natural base for exploring Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. Sitting at more than 3,000 metres above sea level, the city has a relaxed mountain atmosphere and easy access to some of the country’s best hiking routes. You can spend your time trekking through valleys, visiting turquoise lagoons, or exploring the local markets before returning to town for a hearty Andean meal. Huaraz suits you if you like active trips, big mountain scenery, and getting out into nature.

1. Hike to the mountain lagoons

The turquoise waters of the Cordillera Blanca’s glacial lakes are among Huaraz’s biggest draws. You can take on the hike to Laguna 69, one of the region’s most famous trails, or choose a shorter route to Laguna Wilcacocha for views across the surrounding mountains. The higher trails are demanding, but the scenery makes the effort worthwhile.

2. Explore Huascarán National Park

Huaraz is the gateway to Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO-listed reserve filled with glaciers, alpine meadows, deep valleys, and some of Peru’s highest peaks. You can spend a day hiking through the park, join a guided trekking route, or explore by mountain bike. Keep an eye out for Andean wildlife, including vicuñas and the occasional condor soaring overhead.

3. Experience life in the city

Back in Huaraz, you can explore the central streets, browse local markets, and try traditional dishes such as pachamanca, a meat and vegetable dish cooked underground. The city also makes a good base for visiting nearby archaeological sites, including Chavín de Huántar, an important pre-Inca ceremonial centre surrounded by mountain scenery.
