Kurzporträt Caltagirone

Sun-drenched piazzas, colourful ceramics, and elegant Baroque architecture shape Caltagirone, a hilltop town in the heart of Sicily. Renowned for centuries as the island’s centre of ceramic craftsmanship, it combines artistic heritage with sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. You can spend your time wandering historic streets, browsing family-run pottery workshops, or relaxing in lively squares that capture the slower rhythm of Sicilian life. Caltagirone suits you if you enjoy art, history, and authentic towns that are full of local character.

1. Climb the Scala di Santa Maria del Monte

The Scala di Santa Maria del Monte is Caltagirone’s most iconic landmark. Its 142 steps are decorated with hand-painted ceramic tiles, each representing a different style and period of Sicilian craftsmanship. As you climb, you'll be rewarded with increasingly impressive views over the rooftops and surrounding hills.

2. Discover Caltagirone’s ceramic tradition

Ceramics have been produced in Caltagirone for over a thousand years, and you'll find workshops and boutiques throughout the old town. You can watch artisans shape and paint pottery by hand before browsing colourful plates, vases, and decorative tiles that make distinctive Sicilian souvenirs. Several museums also explore the history and evolution of the town’s world-famous craftsmanship.

3. Wander the historic centre

Beyond its ceramics, Caltagirone is a pleasure to explore on foot. You can wander through Baroque streets lined with churches, elegant palaces, and welcoming cafés, stopping in sunny piazzas as you go. The hilltop setting offers frequent viewpoints across the Sicilian countryside, giving the town an atmosphere that feels both peaceful and full of character.
